🧑💻 About the Role: Software Engineer – Travel Portfolio
As a Software Engineer at Costco Travel, you will be a key technical contributor and leader in the design, development, and optimization of software that supports our travel services platform. You will work across the entire technology stack, including front-end interfaces, middleware services, and back-end systems.
This role goes beyond coding. You’ll coach and mentor fellow engineers, guide architecture decisions, ensure secure and scalable systems, and help shape the future of digital travel at Costco.
🛠️ Key Responsibilities
🔧 Engineering & Development
- Design, develop, and maintain client/server and web-based applications using Java and related technologies.
- Work across front-end, middleware, and back-end systems to deliver high-quality software solutions.
- Use Spring, Spring Boot, and other frameworks to build robust and maintainable applications.
- Optimize databases (preferably MS SQL Server) and write performant T-SQL queries.
- Develop and consume RESTful and SOAP APIs to integrate systems.
📈 Planning & Execution
- Participate in sprint planning, retrospectives, demos, and backlog grooming.
- Estimate development efforts and manage delivery timelines across cross-functional teams.
- Apply Agile/Scrum methodologies to ensure iterative and efficient development cycles.
🧠 Leadership & Mentorship
- Act as a technical lead for one or more development teams.
- Conduct code reviews, enforce coding standards, and share best practices.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to knowledge sharing via documentation and workshops.
🔍 Quality & Optimization
- Ensure applications are secure, scalable, durable, and accessible.
- Follow strict software development lifecycle (SDLC) best practices.
- Proactively identify and resolve performance bottlenecks and support issues.
✅ Required Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you must bring:
- ✅ 3+ years of commercial software development experience using Java.
- ✅ Hands-on experience in designing and building full-stack applications.
- ✅ Proficiency in relational databases (preferably MS SQL Server).
- ✅ Experience with Java EE technologies (Servlet, JSP).
- ✅ Experience in working with Spring and/or Spring Boot frameworks.
- ✅ Strong knowledge of JDBC or other database connection tools.
- ✅ Experience working with SOAP and/or RESTful APIs.
- ✅ Working knowledge of software testing, debugging, and troubleshooting.
- ✅ Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
- ✅ Ability to learn quickly, adapt to shifting priorities, and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
🌱 Recommended Skills & Experience
While not mandatory, the following qualifications are highly desirable:
- 🎓 Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
- 📌 Familiarity with Agile and Scrum project methodologies.
- 📊 Strong organizational and documentation skills.
- 🌍 Experience in the travel industry is a big plus.
- 🧩 Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 tools, including Teams, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
